The exploration and development of near and deep space offer unlimited potential benefits for humanity. As a destination and resource for science, observations from and experiments in space frequently provide answers and solutions to many of the most important situations humankind faces on Earth and off, including such matters as climate, medicine, energy, and, ultimately, humankind’s survival.
In the commercial domain, space soon will provide important new resources and economic opportunities that entrepreneurs are now positioning themselves to pursue, develop, and market.
Further, many in private business and government are seriously discussing the possibility of establishing permanent habitats off Earth, both in orbit and on other natural celestial bodies in our solar system.
All of these endeavors hold unprecedented scientific, engineering, financial, legal, and other technical organizational challenges. To accomplish all of the tasks necessary to achieving their potential impacts in the expanding fields of space exploration and development will require a tremendous number of professionals who are skilled in all disciplines.
Unfortunately, a significant percentage of America’s existing aerospace work force is near, at, or beyond retirement, and current trends suggest that the US space effort will face a significant shortage of aerospace professionals in the coming decades.
However, prior generations of space professionals have worked on all projects and missions of the last fifty years, spanning the entire history of space flight from pre-Sputnik, through Apollo, to the Space Shuttle and the ISS. They have exhibited consistent and effective dedication to innovation, and they retain continuing enthusiasm to share the fruits of the experience they gained during their highly productive careers. With decades of hard-won experience and accomplishments to their credit, these space pioneers lack only an effective organizational framework through which they can continue to apply their significant expertise to the great challenges ahead.
Providing such a framework is the mission of ATWG.
By organizing the efforts of some of our most experienced professionals, and enabling them to apply their valuable expertise to contemporary challenges, ATWG is positioned to provide significant advanced innovation capabilities to the policy and aerospace communities that no other group can provide.
Specific activities for ATWG within the larger space development effort focus on providing unique, comprehensive, and balanced advice and evaluations of all aspects of the space endeavor, including:
- Designing innovative solutions to current operational problems;
- Developing policy recommendations and applications;
- Assessing proposed designs for feasibility, effectiveness, and optimization;
- Evaluating alternative proposals and offering unbiased advice on the best options available;
- Bridging the traditional and inherent management, operational, and philosophical divides between the public and private sectors;
- Creating workable visions towards the future concerning terrestrial benefits of space development;
- Mentoring younger leaders and students, and sharing in mutual learning of various and advanced skills, including management, and financing techniques and skills to those who are devoting their professional lives to space sciences, engineering, exploration, migration, and settlement off-Earth.
- Inspiring proposals for the present and future roles of space sciences and engineering, space exploration, and commercial development of space resources in human development;
